Vectorworks to Blender: Design Layers, Classes and Textures Intact
Vectorworks covers architecture, landscape and entertainment design in one application. Blender is where a lot of that work wants to end up for rendering — the transfer is the awkward part.
Design Layers and Classes Do Not Export
A Vectorworks file is organised by design layers and classes, and that organisation is doing real work. It controls visibility, graphics and often which parts of the model belong to which discipline.
Export to a mesh format and both disappear. What arrives in Blender is geometry with no way to isolate the landscape from the building, or the rigging from the set.
Textures are similarly fragile. Vectorworks texture mapping — especially on curved and extruded objects — rarely produces a matching UV layout in Blender, so anything with a visible pattern needs remapping by hand.
Symbols, like blocks elsewhere, tend to explode into individual copies.
What the Connector Preserves
CAD Bridger maps design layers and classes to Blender collections, so the structure you built in Vectorworks continues to be useful for isolating, hiding and rendering parts of the scene separately.
Symbols come across as instances rather than duplicated meshes. Textures arrive as Blender materials with UVs that respect the mapping you set. Object names survive, which matters for large landscape and site models with hundreds of elements.
Mesh density for curved and NURBS-derived geometry is a sync setting rather than a fixed export option.
Resend Instead of Rebuild
Once the Blender scene exists — lighting, materials, vegetation, context, cameras — a design change should not cost you any of it.
CAD Bridger updates the geometry that changed and leaves everything you built in Blender alone. For landscape and site work, where the surrounding scene is often more elaborate than the building itself, that saving is substantial.

Frequently asked questions
Do Vectorworks design layers and classes come across to Blender?
Yes. Both map to Blender collections, so you can isolate and render parts of the model the same way you organised them in Vectorworks.
Is the Vectorworks connector available yet?
It is in development. Archicad, Revit, Rhino and SketchUp are available now, and the Vectorworks connector is next in line.
Do symbols stay instanced?
Yes. Symbols come across as Blender instances rather than separate copies of the geometry.
