SketchUp to Blender: Send Your Model Without the Cleanup

SketchUp is fast to model in and awkward to render out of. Getting a model into Blender usually means an export, an import and then twenty minutes of cleanup you did not plan for.

What Actually Breaks on the Way Out

SketchUp geometry is surface-based, so everything arrives in Blender as triangles. Faces that looked clean in the viewport come through with hidden edges, flipped normals and no usable shading.

Components and groups are the second problem. A SketchUp model built properly with nested components and instances usually lands in Blender as a flat pile of meshes, or as hundreds of separate objects with names like Group#12.

Materials are the third. SketchUp's texture positioning does not translate to a Blender UV map, so a brick wall that tiled perfectly in SketchUp arrives stretched, rotated or scaled to something unrecognisable.

Then you change a wall in SketchUp and repeat all of it.

What CAD Bridger Does Instead

CAD Bridger sends the model straight from SketchUp into Blender without an intermediate SKP, DAE or FBX file. Groups and components come across as a real Blender hierarchy, so nested assemblies stay nested and instanced components stay instanced rather than duplicating geometry.

Materials arrive as Blender materials with UVs that match how the texture sat on the face in SketchUp. Layers become collections you can hide, isolate and render separately.

You also decide how much detail to send. Curved surfaces, hidden geometry and tag-based filtering are all part of the sync rules, so a heavy site model does not have to arrive in full.

The Part That Matters Most: Resending

The reason most SketchUp users abandon Blender is not the first import — it is the second one.

With CAD Bridger, resending an updated model updates the geometry in place. The lighting you set up, the Cycles materials you built, the camera you framed, the trees and furniture you added from an asset library — all of it stays. Only the architecture changes.

That turns Blender from a final-step render tool into something you can use while the design is still moving.

Availability

The SketchUp connector is available now, alongside Rhino, Revit and Archicad. CAD Bridger is in beta and free to try while we roll out invites.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to export from SketchUp?

No. CAD Bridger sends the model directly from SketchUp to Blender, so there is no SKP, DAE, FBX or OBJ export step in between.

Do SketchUp components stay as instances in Blender?

Yes. Components come across as linked instances rather than duplicated meshes, which keeps heavy models light in Blender.

Will resending overwrite my Blender materials and lighting?

No. A resend updates the geometry that changed and preserves your Blender materials, lighting, cameras and added assets.
