Onshape to Blender: Cloud CAD Into a Local Render Scene
Onshape lives in the browser and versions itself continuously. Blender lives on your machine. Bridging those two realities is more than a file format question.
Downloading Is Not a Workflow
The usual Onshape to Blender route is to export a STEP or mesh file, download it, and import it. It works once.
The problem is that Onshape documents are collaborative and versioned. A teammate makes a change and your downloaded file is immediately out of date, with nothing to tell you except a render that no longer matches the design.
Mesh exports also drop the assembly structure that makes an Onshape document navigable, and translate appearances into flat colours at best.
So you end up manually tracking which version of which document your render actually represents.
Structure, Appearances and Versions
CAD Bridger pulls from the Onshape document rather than a downloaded copy. Assemblies and subassemblies map to nested Blender collections, part names are preserved, and repeated instances stay instances.
Appearances arrive as Blender materials ready to develop in Cycles. Tessellation quality is a setting you control, which matters for the smooth surfaces product rendering depends on.
Because the sync is tied to the document, you always know which version of the design the Blender scene reflects.
Collaborative Design, Continuous Rendering
On a team using Onshape, the model changes while you are working on the render. That is normal, not an exception.
Resending updates the geometry in Blender and preserves the scene around it — lighting, shaders, camera, environment. Visualisation stops being a snapshot taken at the end of the project and becomes something that keeps pace with the design.
Availability
The Onshape connector is planned. Archicad, Revit, Rhino and SketchUp are available now, and the beta is free while invites roll out weekly.
Frequently asked questions
Does CAD Bridger work with Onshape's cloud documents?
The planned Onshape connector works from the document itself rather than a downloaded export, so the Blender scene tracks a known version of the design.
Do Onshape assemblies keep their structure in Blender?
Yes. Assemblies and subassemblies map to nested Blender collections with part names preserved and instances kept as instances.
When will the Onshape connector be available?
It is on the roadmap and not yet released. Join the waitlist to be notified and to get 50% off at launch.
