Rhino to Blender Live Sync: Stop Using V-Ray for Your Renders

Hi, I'm Miha. I'm an architect, and for a long time I wanted to bring Blender into my everyday workflow.

I already used Rhino for modelling, but I loved what Blender could do. The rendering quality, the materials, the animation tools, Geometry Nodes, the huge ecosystem of assets and, of course, the freedom of using open-source software.

The problem was not Blender itself.

The problem was getting my Rhino model into Blender and keeping it updated.

Every time I changed something in Rhino, I had to export the model again, import it into Blender, reorganize the geometry, check the materials and make sure I had not broken the scene.

Move a window. Export again.

Change the façade. Export again.

Adjust the roof. Export again.

Then spend more time fixing the Blender file.

On a finished project, this might be manageable. But architectural projects are never really finished until the deadline. Things are constantly moving and changing.

That made Blender difficult to use as part of the actual design process. It was often easier to stay with traditional rendering software like V-Ray, even though I preferred the flexibility and possibilities that Blender offered.

So I started building a solution for myself.

Live Sync Rhino Directly to Blender

CAD Bridger connects Rhino with Blender and allows you to synchronize your model without manually exporting and importing the entire project after every change.

You keep modelling in Rhino, just like before.

Blender becomes your visualization environment.

When something changes in Rhino, the corresponding geometry can be updated in Blender without rebuilding the whole scene from scratch.

That is really the main idea behind CAD Bridger.

I wanted Blender to be something architects could use throughout the project, not only at the very end when the design was already finished.

You can model in Rhino, set up your materials and lighting in Blender, go back to Rhino, make a change and continue working without repeating the same export and import process every time.

Keep the Work You Already Did in Blender

This was one of the most important parts for me.

A normal reimport can overwrite objects, create duplicates or break the organization of the scene. You can lose materials, modifiers, custom properties, UV mapping or other work that took hours to set up.

CAD Bridger is being built around stable object relationships and change tracking.

The goal is to update what changed while preserving as much of your Blender setup as possible.

Your materials should stay in place.

Your lighting should stay in place.

Your cameras, furniture, vegetation, people and other Blender assets should remain part of the scene while the architecture continues to change.

Instead of spending time repairing the file after every revision, you can spend that time improving the image.

Why Move Away from V-Ray?

V-Ray is a powerful rendering tool, and I have used it myself.

But it is also part of a more closed and increasingly expensive software ecosystem. Architects and studios often end up paying for several subscriptions just to model, render and present one project.

Blender offers a different approach.

It includes Cycles for high-quality rendering, Eevee for fast real-time previews, Geometry Nodes for procedural workflows, animation, compositing, simulations and much more.

You can use it for still images, animations, diagrams, walkthroughs, competition visuals, videos and experimental workflows.

You are not limited to one type of rendering or one company's ecosystem.

The issue was never that Blender was not powerful enough for architecture.

The issue was getting architectural geometry into Blender efficiently and keeping it connected to the design model.

That is the problem I am trying to solve with CAD Bridger.

Built by an Architect

I am building this plugin because I needed it myself.

It did not start as a big startup idea or some imaginary workflow. It started with me getting frustrated while working on architectural projects.

I wanted the precision and speed of Rhino together with the rendering freedom of Blender.

I wanted to move a wall, change a window or adjust a façade without rebuilding the visualization.

I wanted Blender to feel like a real part of the architectural process, not a separate application that could only be used once everything else was finished.

CAD Bridger is my attempt to make that possible.

A More Open Architectural Workflow

One of the things I like most about Blender is that it is much more than a rendering engine.

It is open-source, highly customizable and supported by a huge community of artists, developers and studios.

There are also many asset libraries made specifically for Blender.

BlenderKit gives you direct access to models, materials, HDRIs, scenes and other assets from inside Blender.

3D Shaker offers architectural collections with furniture, decorations, lighting, vegetation, people and complete interior or exterior scenes.

For vegetation, there are tools and libraries such as botaniq, with trees, grass, shrubs, flowers, ivy and other landscape assets.

iMeshh provides a large collection of Blender-ready furniture, lighting, plants, materials and architectural objects.

For people, tools such as Human Generator allow you to create and customize human characters directly inside Blender.

Poly Haven also provides free HDRIs, textures and 3D models for lighting, materials and environmental context.

This means you do not need to model every chair, tree, lamp, plant or person yourself.

You can bring a relatively simple Rhino model into Blender and build a complete visualization around it using existing assets for furniture, vegetation, people, lighting and materials.

This is where the live connection becomes especially useful.

The architecture can continue changing in Rhino while the detailed visualization develops in Blender.

You do not need to throw away your scene every time the design changes.

Rhino remains the modelling tool.

Blender becomes the visualization platform.

CAD Bridger connects the two.

More Than Rendering

Blender also opens up possibilities that go far beyond a normal still render.

The same project can be used for animations, walkthroughs, diagrams, videos, virtual reality, real-time presentations and procedural experiments.

Geometry Nodes can be used for façades, vegetation, crowds, terrain, roads, object scattering and many other systems.

Blender's animation tools can be used for construction sequences, design explanations, camera movements and project presentations.

Its compositing tools allow you to adjust colours, combine render passes and finish the image without relying completely on another application.

For me, this is one of the most exciting parts.

Connecting Rhino to Blender is not only about replacing a manual export process. It gives architects access to a much larger creative toolset.

Rhino Is Only the Beginning

CAD Bridger currently focuses on Rhino and Blender, but the idea is not limited to Rhino.

The long-term goal is to create connectors for other CAD and BIM applications, including Archicad, Revit, SketchUp, Vectorworks, SolidWorks, Fusion and Inventor.

The goal is not to replace the modelling software architects already know and use.

It is to connect that software to Blender.

You should be able to keep working in the CAD or BIM application you prefer while using Blender for rendering, animation, procedural tools and presentation.
